How can we get anywhere if we don’t know where we want to go or how to get there?

The best way to find out is to set goals. A goal is simply something we want, an end result that we strive to attain. So why do we need goals and how do they benefit us?

Goals are powerful tools that:

  • Are creative devices that allow us to turn our dreams and ambitions into reality.
  • Give us something to look forward to, something to plan for, and clearly set out the problem to be solved. Human beings are hard wired to thrive on, and be happiest when we have these three things.

  • Give us hope, enthusiasm, optimism and anticipation. With goals the future looks positive, without them we can tend to focus on negatives and worry about what the future might hold for us.
  • Focus our energy and concentration, which makes success more likely.

  • Allow us to design our own future instead of passively accepting what ‘fate’ dishes out.
  • Make us independent because we are creating our own path rather than following other peoples’ ideas about how we should live and what we should do.

  • Let us know our own mind and have our own plan and so make us less likely to be thrown off course.

  • Let us tailor our life and future to our own needs, wants, desires and dreams.
  • Keep our eye on the prize so that when obstacles arise we are less inclined to give up.

  • Provide a blue print, a guide, a logical step-by-step plan to follow to achieve our ambitions.
  • Encourage self-discipline.
